The Adobelite system

The firebox
The firebox consists of three sections: 1) top/smoke shelf (the 30" firebox has two top pieces; a 24" firebox with a single-piece top section is shown at left), 2) center/back section, and 3) base/bottom. The box is cast of concrete and vermiculite, and is lined with real firebrick. Vermiculite is used to reduce the firebox's weight, and also to provide heat transfer. The firebrick interior, while reducing heat transfer, creates a realistic masonry look. FMI's air-cooled chimney is used for easy and inexpensive lightweight venting. (Frames use either a 24" or 30" firebox.)

The frame
The frame is an integral part of the Adobelite system: it determines the style and shape of the finished fireplace. Four basic styles are available, and can be easily modified for custom or unusual installations. The frame is constructed of 1/2" electrical conduit, which is lightweight and non-combustible. It can be shortened or made taller, depending on the height of the ceiling. Optional nichos (niches) and bancos (benches) may also be added during installation.

In the final stages of installation, the frame is placed over the firebox and plastered with three coats of stucco. A variety of finishes may be achieved, depending on the material used for the final coat.
