REQUIRED FLOOR AREA
All kiva fireplaces can be installed either in a corner or on a flat wall. If installed on a flat wall, a recessed chase should be built. See figures A and B.

CHIMNEY CLEARANCES AND PREPARATION
It is highly recommended that a chase be constructed to receive the double-wall chimney system, whether in a corner, above the roof, or in an attic area. A clear and unobstructed chase area of no less than 17"x17" (inside dimensions) or 24"x24" (see figures C and D-when outside combustion air duct needs to be installed) is required for the chimney system. A 2" minimum clearance from combustible materials can begin at up to 3" out from the corner. Where a chimney passes between two roof or floor joists, fireblocking must be installed between the joists to seal off any opening to the chimney area.
